Well, welcome to the world of SADSAA competitions – where the lines are tight, the stakes are high and the sunscreen is non-negotiable.

Joining a SADSAA (South African Deep Sea Angling Association) event isn’t as simple as casting a line and hoping for the best. First, you’ll need to be affiliated with a recognised angling club – no solo cowboys here. From there, it’s about proving your mettle. Competency matters. Not just knowing your knots from your sinkers, but how to handle a fighting chair, read the swell, set a trolling spread, and most importantly, not tangle lines with your team (unless you're angling for a stern talking-to over sundowners).

How to improve your game

Spend time on the water. Fish often, and fish smart. Watch those who’ve done it all before – the quiet guy with the worn gloves probably has more tricks than a magician’s hat. Learn to log your catches, fine-tune your bait presentation and get comfortable with the rules – especially the ones about tagging and releasing. Conservation is king.

Oh, and another thing: SADSAA competitions are as much about sportsmanship as they are about skill. Bring your A-game, your good humour and a healthy respect for the ocean – she can be generous, but she’s no pushover.

Lastly, invest in decent gear and a hat that won’t fly off mid-fight. The rest? Practice, patience and maybe a lucky lure or two.

So, whether you're aiming for Nationals or just wanting to hold your own at the next interclub, sharpen those hooks and get training. The sea is calling – and she wants competence.

Copyright (c) 2025, Sodwana Bay Lodge Diving & Fishing ResortReef Royalty in Stripes2025-07-09T00:00:00+02:00Mariette Greylinghttps://www.sodwanabaylodge.com/blog/post/reef-royalty-in-stripes/
This Clown Surgeonfish was spotted at 2 Mile Reef – Coral Gardens, Sodwana Bay on 8 July 2025 with our diving service provider Adventure Mania Dive Centre.

You don’t need a prescription to appreciate this underwater doctor—the Clown Surgeonfish (Acanthurus lineatus), a reef resident as bold in behaviour as it is in wardrobe choice.

Decked out in high-vis blue and yellow stripes, this blue-banded beauty was spotted doing what it does best: patrolling its patch of algae-covered real estate on the reef crest at around 5 to 12 metres deep. This isn’t just a fish—it’s a one-fish neighbourhood watch, and heaven help any tang or trespasser that dares to graze in its garden.

While it may look like the fashion-forward cousin of Nemo, this surgeonfish comes armed—with scalpel-sharp spines at the base of its tail, just in case things get a little too personal. Don't worry, divers, it’s not out to duel you—it saves the drama for rival fish infringing on its buffet zone.

Beyond its flair and fiery attitude, the Clown Surgeonfish is a key algae grazer, helping keep coral heads clean and the reef ecosystem balanced. Think of it as a groundskeeper with pizzazz.

And those colours? Not just for show. They help with species recognition and reef right-of-way rules—because even fish traffic needs some order in the chaos of coral life.

📸 Snapped by Kyle Roberts, who caught this stripy character mid-shuffle.

Next time you’re out diving with Adventure Mania at Sodwana Bay Lodge, keep an eye out for this reef rockstar with a ruler's temperament. Just don’t touch the tail. You’ve been warned.

Ready to dive into Sodwana’s technicolour world? This is your gateway to unforgettable encounters with ocean giants. As the only licensed whale watching operator in the Sodwana Bay area, we’re thrilled to offer an experience that blends exhilaration with environmental insight. And right on cue, the whales are making waves in the scientific community with their songs.

In a fascinating study spanning six years, scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in California have been eavesdropping on whale songs—and what they’re hearing is music with a message. Published in the journal PLOS One, the study revealed that the number of days humpback whales sing had almost doubled, providing valuable clues about ocean health and food supply.

“The amount of humpback whale song continually increased,” said lead researcher Dr John Ryan, “with their songs being detected on 34% of days at the beginning of the study and rising to 76% of days after six years.” This increase closely mirrored boom years for krill and anchovy populations, showing just how finely tuned whales are to the ocean’s rhythm.

Hydrophones were used to record songs from blue, fin and humpback whales. According to Dr Ryan, “the acoustic behaviour of baleen whales provides insights about which species can better adapt to changing ocean conditions”. Humpbacks, in particular, stood out for their adaptability. Skin biopsies even confirmed they were switching prey depending on what was abundant—a sort of buffet approach to survival.

So, what does this mean for us at Sodwana Bay? It’s simple: when the whales sing, it’s a good sign. Their songs signal not only their presence but the health of the ecosystem we share with them.

Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned ocean lover, a Whale Watcher tour is your chance to hear this marine symphony up close—and support conservation in the process. The research underscores what we've always believed: listening to whales might just help save them.

Book your Whale Watcher tour from 1 July 2025 and come experience the ocean's most incredible soundtrack for yourself.
Copyright (c) 2025, Sodwana Bay Lodge Diving & Fishing ResortA guide to fishing at Sodwana Bay2025-05-23T00:00:00+02:00Mariette Greylinghttps://www.sodwanabaylodge.com/blog/post/a-guide-to-fishing-at-sodwana-bay/
Renowned for its rich marine biodiversity, with over 1 200 recorded fish species, Sodwana Bay is fishing paradise. Whether you're new to the game or a seasoned angler chasing a personal best, be assured of an exceptional experience.

FOR BEGINNERS

When it comes to shore-based fishing, the variety is more limited compared to offshore or reef fishing. Start by exploring the surf fishing opportunities right off the beach. Early mornings and late afternoons yield the best results, particularly for species such as pompano. These fish are frequently caught in the surf zone, especially in the northern part of the bay where the shoreline curves towards Witsand and Mozambique.

Pompano are often targeted with sardine bait on small hooks, with the bait suspended about 40 cm below the surface. While abundant, many are undersized, but enough legal-sized fish can be caught for a meal. Make sure to learn about the tides, safety and conservation regulations.

Various Caranx species such as Kingfish are present and can be caught by experienced anglers, particularly near rocky outcrops or deeper gutters along the shore. Caution is advised due to wave action and slippery surfaces.

FOR THE PROS

Deep sea fishing here is truly heaven! Launching through the surf (via Magnum Fishing Charters) gives access to prolific waters where game fish such as marlin, sailfish, king mackerel and tuna abound. The summer months (November to March) are prime for billfish, while winter sees a rise in bottom-dwelling species. Jigging and trolling techniques work well, and artificial lures often outperform bait in these rich waters.

Sodwana Bay is part of a protected marine reserve, so always check updated fishing permits, size and bag limits. Catch-and-release is encouraged, especially for large or endangered species. Respect for the ocean is key to preserving its bounty.

FINAL TIP

Don’t forget to soak up the scenery. Between the coral reefs, playful dolphins and humpback whale sightings (from July till November), fishing at Sodwana is as much about the thrill of the chase as it is about the beautiful setting.

Whether you’re here to learn or to land a trophy fish, Sodwana Bay promises prime moments on the line.
Copyright (c) 2025, Sodwana Bay Lodge Diving & Fishing ResortEscape the chill at Sodwana Bay Lodge2025-05-17T00:00:00+02:00Mariette Greylinghttps://www.sodwanabaylodge.com/blog/post/escape-the-chill-at-sodwana-bay-lodge/
When the winter cold starts biting and the skies settle into grey moods, one starts dreaming of a great escape. But why dream when Sodwana Bay Lodge is calling—offering balmy days, sapphire waters and the kind of soul-stirring serenity you forgot you needed?

In this tropical corner of KwaZulu-Natal, winter doesn’t come dressed in raincoats and scarves. It arrives in style: warm sun, calm seas and refreshing coastal breezes. While the rest of the country is lighting fires and layering up, Sodwana Bay is dialing things down.

SUNSHINE SERVED DAILY

Unlike the heat-laced humidity of summer, winter here is all about golden days and crisp, clear nights. Think 24 degrees at noon and cool, restful evenings under star-rich skies. Perfect for cocktails at sunset, beach walks that don’t leave you melting and afternoon naps that stretch deliciously into dusk.

The winter climate at Sodwana Bay Lodge invites you to explore without breaking a sweat—whether you’re diving the world-renowned coral reefs or sipping your third coffee on the deck while watching the local antelope.

BEST-KEPT OCEAN SECRETS

Let’s talk scuba and snorkels. Sodwana’s reefs are legendary—but in winter, they really shine. Visibility is good, the sea is often calmer, and the crowds? Practically non-existent. It’s like someone booked the Indian Ocean just for you.

Expect enchanting encounters with turtles, dolphins and kaleidoscopic schools of reef fish.

UNWIND, UNPLUG, UNBOTHERED

One of the best things about a winter breakaway to Sodwana Bay Lodge is how far away it feels—from everything. This isn’t your average break. It’s the sound of nothing but birds and waves. It’s barefoot breakfasts, afternoons at the pool and evenings where time seems to soften around the edges.

And it’s not just the surroundings that are welcoming. The lodge is a laid-back blend of comfort and charm, with friendly faces and warm hospitality. Whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple, or with a whole beach-loving crew, Sodwana Bay Lodge sets the tone for a total reset.

SECRET SEASON, SMARTER TRAVEL

Here’s a cheeky bonus: winter often brings better value. Fewer tourists mean more space to breathe and more attention from staff.

So, when winter starts to get too much, why not shrug it off altogether? Swap your scarf for sandals. Let Sodwana Bay Lodge remind you what warmth feels like—inside and out.
Copyright (c) 2025, Sodwana Bay Lodge Diving & Fishing ResortGuest reviews matter2025-04-08T00:00:00+02:00Mariette Greylinghttps://www.sodwanabaylodge.com/blog/post/guest-reviews-matter/
Sodwana Bay Lodge thrives on more than just its breathtaking surroundings—it flourishes through the voices of its guests. Reviews are not just feedback; they are the pulse of the lodge’s reputation, shaping first impressions and guiding future travellers.

Every honest review carries weight. This approach ensures that future generations can enjoy the sight of these apex predators for years to come.

Catch and release of billfish, such as marlin, sailfish, and swordfish, is a highly desirable fishing practice for several compelling reasons:

1. Conservation of Species

Billfish are often apex predators, playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. Many billfish species are slow-growing, late to mature and produce relatively few offspring. Overfishing poses a significant threat to their populations. Catch and release helps mitigate this impact by allowing anglers to enjoy the sport while ensuring these species remain in the wild for future generations.

2. Promotion of Sustainable Fishing Practices

By practicing catch and release, anglers contribute to sustainable fishing methods. This ensures that recreational fishing does not contribute to the depletion of these prized species, helping balance enjoyment of the sport with ecological responsibility.

4. Preserving the Thrill of the Sport

Billfish are renowned for their size, strength and acrobatics, making them a favourite target for sport anglers. The challenge of catching such a powerful fish is a key part of the experience, but releasing it allows others to enjoy the same thrill. It also ensures the longevity of fishing opportunities Sodwana Bay. By practicing catch and release, we can continue to attract visitors without depleting the local fish populations, sustaining both local economies and the marine environment.

6. Ethical Considerations

For many anglers, catch and release is an ethical choice. It aligns with a respect for marine life, ensuring that the joy of fishing doesn’t come at the expense of the fish population’s survival. Proper techniques, such as using circle hooks and minimizing handling, further enhance the ethical nature of this practice.

For Sodwana Bay Lodge, this policy is not just about environmental responsibility—it’s also about enhancing the fishing experience. Anglers get a sense of fulfillment that goes beyond the physical act of fishing. It’s difficult not to be moved by the sky’s canvas of colours that blends hues of gold and fiery orange. For those fortunate enough to witness this phenomenon at Sodwana Bay, the magic of the moment is amplified by its serene setting and the endless expanse of ocean meeting the African sky.

Sodwana Bay - renowned for its striking coastal dunes, pristine beaches and rich marine life - offers one of South Africa’s most remarkable spots to witness the rising sun. Here, nature’s morning performance is a harmonious interplay of light, water and sand.

Whether you’re seated on the sand or standing barefoot along the tide line, the day’s grand opening is always quite the occasion. And the world literally slows down. The air is filled with a serenity, punctuated by the gentle sound of waves rolling in and seagulls squawking. For many, this moment becomes a shared experience with friends, family, or even strangers. As the saying goes, 'A million miracles begin at sunrise.'

A sensory experience

Sunrises at Sodwana Bay aren’t just visual marvels, they’re a sensory experience that brings peace and reflection. As the first slivers of sunlight appear, visitors can connect with nature and each other. It’s a chance to appreciate life’s simple yet profound moments, reminding us of the beauty that surrounds us every day.

Scientifically speaking, Jason Parnell-Brookes explains that when the sun gets closer to the horizon at sunrise or sunset, the light travels sideways through more of our atmosphere before it reaches our eyes, and so the blue light is scattered more, and more. Due to this extra dispersal of the blue light it becomes less intense, until we see the longer wavelengths of light such as reds, oranges and yellows.

Whether you're there to capture the perfect photo or simply to watch the world say hello to a new day, witnessing a sunrise at Sodwana Bay is an unforgettable experience. It’s an invitation to pause, breathe and marvel at the wonders of our world.

It's good for you!

Studies show that appreciating natural beauty such as a sunrise may boost well-being, increase generosity and enhance life satisfaction. On a psychological level, people who feel connected with nature are reportedly happier and have more positive emotions than those who don’t share this connection.

The key is to actively engage with the experience. So, stop, be still and appreciate the show in the sky.

At Sodwana Bay Lodge, we encourage our guests not to miss this experience. As Marcus Aurelius said, ‘When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.'

Copyright (c) 2024, Sodwana Bay Lodge Diving & Fishing ResortMarlin fishing is the ultimate high2024-10-21T00:00:00+02:00Mariette Greylinghttps://www.sodwanabaylodge.com/blog/post/marlin-fishing-is-the-ultimate-high/
For those seeking an unforgettable deep-sea fishing experience, look no further than Sodwana Bay Lodge. Among the most exhilarating of these is the pursuit of marlin, where anglers embrace the challenge of catching and releasing one of the ocean’s most magnificent creatures.

A Dream Catch

Often dubbed the "king of game fish", marlin are a prized catch due to their size, speed, and sheer power. With their striking sword-like bills and iridescent blue, green, and silver hues, these giants of the deep exude a mystique that draws seasoned anglers from around the world. Marlin can grow up to 5 meters in length and weigh over 600 kg, making every encounter a true test of skill and endurance.

At Sodwana Bay, both blue and black marlin thrive in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. The rich marine life here provides ample food sources, attracting these majestic fish and creating the perfect setting for sport fishing.

The Catch-and-Release Tradition

What makes Sodwana Bay Lodge’s marlin fishing charters so special is our commitment to conservation. The practice of catch-and-release fishing ensures the sustainability of these magnificent creatures. Anglers take on the challenge of landing the fish, marvelling at their strength and beauty, before releasing them back into the ocean unharmed. This allows future generations to experience the same thrill while preserving the delicate balance of the marine ecosystem.

For many, the release of a marlin is the most rewarding part of the experience. Watching a fish of such size and grace swim back into the deep blue is a humbling reminder of nature’s grandeur. It’s a moment of connection between human and animal.

The Deep-Sea Adventure

A day of marlin fishing at Sodwana Bay Lodge begins early, with anglers boarding a well-equipped boat designed for deep-sea expeditions. Experienced skippers, who know the waters intimately, guide these boats far out into the ocean, where the real adventure begins.

The anticipation builds as the boat cuts through the waves, rods set and lures trailing in the water. The tranquility of the sea contrasts with the adrenaline that kicks in once a marlin takes the bait. The reel screams as the fish bolts, and the battle is on. For hours, anglers wrestle with the marlin, each tug and pull a test of determination. These fish are known for their acrobatic displays, often leaping out of the water in spectacular fashion, making every moment more electrifying.

Despite the challenge, the experience isn’t solely about landing the fish. It’s about the camaraderie on board, the awe-inspiring views of the endless ocean, and the sheer joy of being immersed in nature’s raw beauty.

A Journey to Remember

Marlin fishing at Sodwana Bay Lodge is more than just a sport—it’s an unforgettable adventure that offers a profound connection to the ocean. It’s about the thrill of the chase, the satisfaction of the release, and the beauty of nature’s wildest wonders. For avid anglers and nature lovers alike, this is an experience that should be on every bucket list.
Copyright (c) 2024, Sodwana Bay Lodge Diving & Fishing ResortWitness the marvel of turtle nesting2024-10-09T00:00:00+02:00Mariette Greylinghttps://www.sodwanabaylodge.com/blog/post/witness-the-marvel-of-turtle-nesting/
We’re counting the days till we start offering our sought-after Turtle Tours as from November. This is an experience you don’t want to miss.

Nestled behind the world's highest vegetated sand dunes and just 6 km from the beach, Sodwana Bay Lodge offers an opportunity for nature lovers to witness the remarkable life cycle of two endangered turtle species—the massive leatherback and the smaller, but equally resilient, loggerhead. From November to March, we organise evening beach drives along the pristine 16-kilometer coastline, providing a front-row seat to a spectacular natural event: the nesting and hatching of these very special marine creatures.

Sodwana Bay is a crucial nesting site for both the leatherback and loggerhead turtles who come ashore to nest between November and January each year. This period is vital for their reproductive cycle as they return to the beaches where they were born to lay their eggs.

Both turtle species face significant threats due to habitat loss, egg poaching and artificial light pollution that disrupts their natural navigation during nesting and hatching. Sodwana Bay serves not only as a vital habitat for these ancient creatures but also as a key location for conservation efforts aimed at protecting their populations.

Size matters

Leatherback Turtles are the largest of all sea turtles, weighing between 250 to 700 kg (up to nearly a ton) and measuring up to 2 meters in length. They are notable for their unique leathery shell rather than a hard carapace.

Loggerhead Turtles weigh around 160 kg and although they’re smaller than leatherbacks, they’re still significant in size with large heads and powerful jaws.

Nesting Behaviour

Female turtles typically lay between 80 to 120 eggs per nesting event, digging deep nests with their flippers - often up to half a meter. After laying, the females cover the nests with sand before returning to the ocean.

The incubation period for the eggs lasts about 60 to 70 days, with hatchlings emerging primarily at night. This timing helps them avoid predators as they make their way to the sea. Sadly, only a fraction of hatchlings will survive the treacherous journey from nest to sea.

The tour

Watching the turtles emerge from the ocean to nest is a humbling experience - a reminder of the constant struggle these ancient creatures face.

Sodwana Bay Lodge’s evening turtle tours offer a rare chance to witness these endangered species up close. However, the tours are tide-dependent. But whether you're setting off at sunset or under the stars, the experience is magical.

As you journey along the beach in a comfortable 4x4, our knowledgeable guides will share fascinating insights into the turtles' behaviour, their migratory patterns, and the conservation efforts underway to protect them.

Plan your turtle tour

Be sure to reserve your spot on one of our turtle tours. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a wildlife photographer, or simply someone looking for a unique experience, this tour will leave a lasting impression.
Copyright (c) 2024, Sodwana Bay Lodge Diving & Fishing ResortCouples need some time out2024-09-24T00:00:00+02:00Mariette Greylinghttps://www.sodwanabaylodge.com/blog/post/couples-need-some-time-out/
Let’s face it: daily life is rough on couples. With a depth ranging from 8 - 18 m, this reef offers varied topography. There are rocky outcrops, large sand patches, caves and swim-throughs. And because this reef is so vast, you’ll discover something new with every dive.

On the outer edge lies Sponge reef. Here, the 32-m Deep Sponge is well-liked by many divers. Expect to see snapper, moray eels, nudibranchs, potato bass, trumpetfish, frogfish, angelfish, surgeonfish, clownfish and shrimp, to name a few.

Another good dive is at 5 Mile Reef, where you might see Ragged Tooth Sharks and Bottlenose Dolphins, as well as Ribbon Eels and colourful Paper fish. Within 5 Mile Reef you’ll find Lettuce Reef, Ribbon Reef and Pothole.

Generally, Stringer is best for diving in flat conditions when there’s not much current. In this oasis-like setting, there are two rocky outcrops that attract gamefish. But it’s also a nursery area for juvenile fish.

From July to late September, the Humpback Migration is in full swing and it’s truly something to behold if you spot them during your dive. Divers can usually hear the haunting whale song in the deep.

Although diving is always good at Sodwana Bay, the best diving months are from January to May, with warm water and 20 - 30 m visibility.

Most importantly, snorkelling and scuba diving offer the opportunity to get up close and personal with coral reefs, but we always advocate the importance of responsible diving to preserve the delicate ecosystems.

The long and short of it is that Sodwana Bay Lodge should be your next diving destination of choice.
Copyright (c) 2024, Sodwana Bay Lodge Diving & Fishing ResortSaluting women2024-08-07T00:00:00+02:00Mariette Greylinghttps://www.sodwanabaylodge.com/blog/post/saluting-women/
As we celebrate Women’s Month, we want to take a moment to pay tribute to all the women who are part of our community.

To our women customers, thank you for your support. When guests leave happy, I’m happy. And any subsequent compliments are appreciated sincerely.’

Didi is on duty from 7h00 until 15h00 and enjoys every minute. ‘Sometimes it’s a bit taxing when multiple bookings happen all at once, but at the end of the day, it gives me great satisfaction when all the boxes have been ticked,’ she said.

What helps too, is that Didi is passionate about the sea. ‘Being a snorkeller and ardent angler, the sea is my happy place. I also have a daughter who’s doing a diving instructors' course, so I support her wholeheartedly in this endeavour.’

She’s already 13 months into the job and considers it the highlight of her career thus far. ‘We have a great team and our boss, Richard, is a pleasure to work with.’

After hours, Didi and her partner Shannon (who’s the branch manager of Build It in Mbazwana) love spending time with the five daughters they have between them and pet Yorkie Maya. ‘That is a full time job in itself!’ The couple is also involved with many community projects.

Didi’s favourite food is seafood and her signature drink is a dry martini.
Copyright (c) 2024, Sodwana Bay Lodge Diving & Fishing ResortA workcation at Sodwana Bay Lodge ticks all the boxes2024-07-16T00:00:00+02:00Mariette Greylinghttps://www.sodwanabaylodge.com/blog/post/a-workcation-at-sodwana-bay-lodge-ticks-all-the-bo/
Now with a fibre line, Sodwana Bay Lodge offers the perfect base for corporate travellers who would like a workcation like no other.

What better way to be productive than an environment where a magnificent verdant garden view offers respite from staring at a screen. There are many reasons to reaffirm your love and commitment to your spouse – be it 5, 10, 30 or 50 years. Main thing is, you want to celebrate the fact that you'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Vow renewal celebrations tend to be small and intimate and because Sodwana Bay Lodge is renowned for celebrations of any kind, we’d love to host you. We love the trend that the couple's closest friends and their children participate in the celebration. Perhaps even with the original maid of honour and best man.

That said, the beauty of a vow renewal ceremony is that you can structure it as an elaborate affair or a low-key event. There are no rules or restrictions. You also simply may want your second honeymoon at Sodwana Bay Lodge!

Unlike a wedding, a vow renewal is not a legal ceremony. The ceremony is simply to reconfirm an already legal marriage. So the only documentation that a person conducting the ceremony would request is to see your original marriage licence.

Whether you need a lot of wow or a more toned-down event, both the lodge and its onsite restaurant Leatherbacks cater for all requirements. Select a time which makes the ceremony the most meaningful (i.e. when your children can be present, or a special date).

For this ceremony you have more leeway to invite only those you feel deserve to be there to witness your reaffirmation of love. And the officiant can be non-denominational, interfaith, cross-cultural – in short anyone you trust. You’d want the person conducting it to value your marriage and express it through the ceremony in an eloquent, purposeful way. Take time to find the perfect fit so that the ceremony is that much more special.

Each couple that considers a vow renewal has their own personal reason for choosing to do so. We at Sodwana Bay Lodge just love the romanticism of it all and can’t wait to make your special day even more special.

Copyright (c) 2024, Sodwana Bay Lodge Diving & Fishing Resort
