This Clown Surgeonfish was spotted at 2 Mile Reef – Coral Gardens, Sodwana Bay on 8 July 2025 with our diving service provider Adventure Mania Dive Centre.

You don’t need a prescription to appreciate this underwater doctor—the Clown Surgeonfish (Acanthurus lineatus), a reef resident as bold in behaviour as it is in wardrobe choice.

Decked out in high-vis blue and yellow stripes, this blue-banded beauty was spotted doing what it does best: patrolling its patch of algae-covered real estate on the reef crest at around 5 to 12 metres deep. This isn’t just a fish—it’s a one-fish neighbourhood watch, and heaven help any tang or trespasser that dares to graze in its garden.

While it may look like the fashion-forward cousin of Nemo, this surgeonfish comes armed—with scalpel-sharp spines at the base of its tail, just in case things get a little too personal. Don't worry, divers, it’s not out to duel you—it saves the drama for rival fish infringing on its buffet zone.

Beyond its flair and fiery attitude, the Clown Surgeonfish is a key algae grazer, helping keep coral heads clean and the reef ecosystem balanced. Think of it as a groundskeeper with pizzazz.

As is the case every year, Whale Watcher tours officially launch at Sodwana Bay Lodge from 1 July 2025. This is your gateway to unforgettable encounters with ocean giants. As the only licensed whale watching operator in the Sodwana Bay area, we’re thrilled to offer an experience that blends exhilaration with environmental insight. And right on cue, the whales are making waves in the scientific community with their songs.

In a fascinating study spanning six years, scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in California have been eavesdropping on whale songs—and what they’re hearing is music with a message. Published in the journal PLOS One, the study revealed that the number of days humpback whales sing had almost doubled, providing valuable clues about ocean health and food supply.

“The amount of humpback whale song continually increased,” said lead researcher Dr John Ryan, “with their songs being detected on 34% of days at the beginning of the study and rising to 76% of days after six years.” This increase closely mirrored boom years for krill and anchovy populations, showing just how finely tuned whales are to the ocean’s rhythm.

Hydrophones were used to record songs from blue, fin and humpback whales. According to Dr Ryan, “the acoustic behaviour of baleen whales provides insights about which species can better adapt to changing ocean conditions”. Humpbacks, in particular, stood out for their adaptability. Skin biopsies even confirmed they were switching prey depending on what was abundant—a sort of buffet approach to survival.

A guide to fishing at Sodwana Bay

Renowned for its rich marine biodiversity, with over 1 200 recorded fish species, Sodwana Bay is fishing paradise. Whether you're new to the game or a seasoned angler chasing a personal best, be assured of an exceptional experience.

FOR BEGINNERS

When it comes to shore-based fishing, the variety is more limited compared to offshore or reef fishing. Start by exploring the surf fishing opportunities right off the beach. Early mornings and late afternoons yield the best results, particularly for species such as pompano. These fish are frequently caught in the surf zone, especially in the northern part of the bay where the shoreline curves towards Witsand and Mozambique.

Pompano are often targeted with sardine bait on small hooks, with the bait suspended about 40 cm below the surface. While abundant, many are undersized, but enough legal-sized fish can be caught for a meal. Make sure to learn about the tides, safety and conservation regulations.

Various Caranx species such as Kingfish are present and can be caught by experienced anglers, particularly near rocky outcrops or deeper gutters along the shore. Caution is advised due to wave action and slippery surfaces.

FOR THE PROS

Deep sea fishing here is truly heaven! Launching through the surf (via Magnum Fishing Charters) gives access to prolific waters where game fish such as marlin, sailfish, king mackerel and tuna abound. The summer months (November to March) are prime for billfish, while winter sees a rise in bottom-dwelling species. Jigging and trolling techniques work well, and artificial lures often outperform bait in these rich waters.

Sodwana Bay is part of a protected marine reserve, so always check updated fishing permits, size and bag limits. Catch-and-release is encouraged, especially for large or endangered species. Respect for the ocean is key to preserving its bounty.

We’re counting the days till we start offering our sought-after Turtle Tours as from November. This is an experience you don’t want to miss.

Nestled behind the world's highest vegetated sand dunes and just 6 km from the beach, Sodwana Bay Lodge offers an opportunity for nature lovers to witness the remarkable life cycle of two endangered turtle species—the massive leatherback and the smaller, but equally resilient, loggerhead. From November to March, we organise evening beach drives along the pristine 16-kilometer coastline, providing a front-row seat to a spectacular natural event: the nesting and hatching of these very special marine creatures.

Sodwana Bay is a crucial nesting site for both the leatherback and loggerhead turtles who come ashore to nest between November and January each year. This period is vital for their reproductive cycle as they return to the beaches where they were born to lay their eggs.

Both turtle species face significant threats due to habitat loss, egg poaching and artificial light pollution that disrupts their natural navigation during nesting and hatching. Sodwana Bay serves not only as a vital habitat for these ancient creatures but also as a key location for conservation efforts aimed at protecting their populations.

Size matters

Leatherback Turtles are the largest of all sea turtles, weighing between 250 to 700 kg (up to nearly a ton) and measuring up to 2 meters in length. They are notable for their unique leathery shell rather than a hard carapace.

Loggerhead Turtles weigh around 160 kg and although they’re smaller than leatherbacks, they’re still significant in size with large heads and powerful jaws.

Nesting Behaviour

Female turtles typically lay between 80 to 120 eggs per nesting event, digging deep nests with their flippers - often up to half a meter. After laying, the females cover the nests with sand before returning to the ocean.

The incubation period for the eggs lasts about 60 to 70 days, with hatchlings emerging primarily at night. This timing helps them avoid predators as they make their way to the sea. Sadly, only a fraction of hatchlings will survive the treacherous journey from nest to sea.

With its astonishing marine biodiversity that thrives in the overlap of cooler and warmer waters, perfect year-round water temperatures and top-notch diving facilities, it's no wonder that Sodwana Bay is one of South Africa's premier diving spots.

At about 1.8 km long and almost 900 m wide in places, 2 Mile Reef is the largest coral reef. With a depth ranging from 8 - 18 m, this reef offers varied topography. There are rocky outcrops, large sand patches, caves and swim-throughs. And because this reef is so vast, you’ll discover something new with every dive.

On the outer edge lies Sponge reef. Here, the 32-m Deep Sponge is well-liked by many divers. Expect to see snapper, moray eels, nudibranchs, potato bass, trumpetfish, frogfish, angelfish, surgeonfish, clownfish and shrimp, to name a few.

Another good dive is at 5 Mile Reef, where you might see Ragged Tooth Sharks and Bottlenose Dolphins, as well as Ribbon Eels and colourful Paper fish. Within 5 Mile Reef you’ll find Lettuce Reef, Ribbon Reef and Pothole.

Generally, Stringer is best for diving in flat conditions when there’s not much current. In this oasis-like setting, there are two rocky outcrops that attract gamefish. But it’s also a nursery area for juvenile fish.

From July to late September, the Humpback Migration is in full swing and it’s truly something to behold if you spot them during your dive. Divers can usually hear the haunting whale song in the deep.

Although diving is always good at Sodwana Bay, the best diving months are from January to May, with warm water and 20 - 30 m visibility.

Most importantly, snorkelling and scuba diving offer the opportunity to get up close and personal with coral reefs, but we always advocate the importance of responsible diving to preserve the delicate ecosystems.

Meet our bubbly hotel lodge manager

With an innate love for people, Sodwana Bay Lodge’s hotel manager Didi Kriek loves the guest interaction. ‘What I particularly enjoy is handling all aspects to ensure that guests have a memorable visit: from hotel reservations to booking their various activities – be it diving, fishing, whale watching or turtle tours. When guests leave happy, I’m happy. And any subsequent compliments are appreciated sincerely.’

Didi is on duty from 7h00 until 15h00 and enjoys every minute. ‘Sometimes it’s a bit taxing when multiple bookings happen all at once, but at the end of the day, it gives me great satisfaction when all the boxes have been ticked,’ she said.

What helps too, is that Didi is passionate about the sea. ‘Being a snorkeller and ardent angler, the sea is my happy place. I also have a daughter who’s doing a diving instructors' course, so I support her wholeheartedly in this endeavour.’

She’s already 13 months into the job and considers it the highlight of her career thus far. ‘We have a great team and our boss, Richard, is a pleasure to work with.’

After hours, Didi and her partner Shannon (who’s the branch manager of Build It in Mbazwana) love spending time with the five daughters they have between them and pet Yorkie Maya. ‘That is a full time job in itself!’ The couple is also involved with many community projects.

Didi’s favourite food is seafood and her signature drink is a dry martini.

Unlike a wedding, a vow renewal is not a legal ceremony. The ceremony is simply to reconfirm an already legal marriage. So the only documentation that a person conducting the ceremony would request is to see your original marriage licence.
